Wikepidia defines Social Media Optimization (SMO) are a way to optimize websites so they would be more easily connected or interlaced with online communities and community websites. There are a lot of terrific blogs focusing on the concept of SMO, and we have no desire to repeat the great work that they are doing. Instead our focus is on how SMO relates to the other areas of online marketing like Word of Mouth Marketing, Viral Marketing, and Search Engine Optimization. In order to be successful, SMO must move from the concept to a marketing tactic that can be utilized by businesses across industry groups. SMO cannot be niche tactic foe only technology companies. It needs to be embraced by the business community at large.
By the business community at large, I do not mean purely B2C or technology companies. I mean more traditional industry sectors like law. Law firms are perfect candidates for SMO. Think about the type of content that a typical law firm will produce over the course of a year
- Announcements of new partners or hires
- Publications that are written for newspapers of journals
- Opinions on law
Traditionally this content would be reduced to what’s new section of the web site that nobody reads or knows about. By harnessing the power of RSS, law firms can distribute their content to a wider and more targeted audience, increase awareness of the law firm and potentially attracting new customers. All through embracing a part of social media optimization.
