Cuban Continues YouTube Rant
Earlier this month I blogged about Mark Cuban taking a shot at YouTube. Well it seems that Cuban cannot stop talking about YouTube. Reuters has a article on his most recent shots including:
“They are just breaking the law,” Cuban told a group of advertisers in New York. “The only reason it hasn’t been sued yet is because there is nobody with big money to sue.”
Cuban said “anyone who buys that (YouTube) is a moron” because of potential lawsuits from copyright violations.

Will YouTube Be The Attack Dog of American Politics?
After my earlier post this week about Politicians and Social Media I received an email asking whether I thought that candidate ads that are run on YouTube would be subject to the same laws that govern television ads? And it is a great question. Currently the social networks seem to be free of any sort of government regulation and oversight as far as political ads are concerned. Slate had a great article last month on the impact that YouTube played in the Lieberman-Lamont race in Connecticut.
CNET summarized Lieberman’s defeat as:

It’s 1999 All Over Again
The Japanese version on MySpace is called Mixi and it recently launched had an IPO on the Nikkei stock market. Much has been made of the values that owners are putting on Facebook and YouTube, but these valuations are nothing compared to that of Mixi.
Mixi has only about 5 million members and its recent stock market value was about $1.9 billion! CNET asked:
What does this mean for U.S. social networks? A lot or nothing, depending on whom you ask. Based on revenue projections and other factors, Forrester analyst Charlene Li wrote, “A rough back-of-the-envelope would value MySpace’s 100 million users at $20 billion and Facebook’s 7.5 million users would be worth $1.5 billion.

Politicians and Social Media
Just as corporations need to create and execute a social medial marketing plan, so do politicians running for office. Political figures have long complained that the media was filtering their message to the voters. So it is with no real surprise then that an aspiring politician in Canada is using YouTube as a platform to reach voters, especially younger voters.
The politician is called Carol Loader and she said that she is using YouTube because:

Should You Bebo?
While MySpace gets the attention of the mainstream media, rival Bebo recently celebrated its first birthday with little of the fanfare usually attributed to web 2.0 sites. If you live in the U.S. you might be wondering who or what is Bebo?
Launched in July 2005, Bebo is the 2nd largest social networking site in the world with more than 27 million registered members, making it the fastest growing social networking site on the Net. What is Bebo about? Well Bebo bills itself as:

Air Force Says No To MySpace
Less than a week after the White House thought that YouTube was a safe place to display anti-drug videos, came news that the Air Force had cancelled its profile on MySpace because of concerns about associating the service with content that it deems inappropriate. According to The Air Force Times:
The Air Force Recruiting Service launched the profile Aug. 21 to promote its new “Do Something Amazing” television and online advertising campaign, but decided to pull the plug on the profile after the new campaign launched Monday, said Col. Brian Madtes, chief of the Recruiting Service’s strategic communication division.

Del.icio.us reports 1 million users
Techcrunch had a post that Del.icio.us recently registered its 1 millionth user. Since Yahoo acquired Del.icio.us 10 months ago, Del.icio.us has become the clear leader in the social bookmarking space as it has gianed more than 600,000 users.
Del.icio.us is a great tool for monitoring what people are saying about your competitors (and yourself). Later this week I will post an article on how to use social media tools to your competitive advantage.

Business Week Social Media Guide
Business Week rolled out a CEO guide to social networks recently. While the information presented is very basic, if you are new to the social media/social networking world, then you will probably find the information useful. At the very least, the guide brings you up to speed on the major players in the space.

Has YouTube Peaked?
Hard on the heels of the news that Facebook is out trying to sell itself for $1 billion, the New York Post reported Monday that YouTube is looking to get bought out for $1.5 billion.
Had to love the quote from an unnamed source who said:
“If they were willing to take $200 million to $300 million, I would buy it tomorrow,” a senior industry source told The Post.

Facebook Chasing MySpace
Friday’s USA Today had an interesting table that showed the growth in page-views in August 2006 versus August 2005 for youth-oriented social networks.
- MySpace +249%
- Facebook +230%
- Craiglist +111%
- Google +68%
- Yahoo -6%
- Microsoft Sites – 8%
- eBaY -10%
- Time Warner Sites – 40%
- Comcast -28%

Facebook’s growth over the last 12 months has been impressive, and it has done it with a lot less fanfare and magazine covers than its rival. Facebook is busy shopping itself for a reportable $1 billion. Whether it is worth that or not is a question for the analysts. But with Yahoo and MSN both losing market share in the youth market, can either of them afford to not buy Facebook.
