Should You Podcast?

At the San Jose Search Engine Strategies Conference Brian Monahan from IPG spoke about the emergence of an alternative media world that includes Podcasts and Video. Brian mentioned that there are currently 40,000 radio stations and 48,000 Podcasts. Podcasts are a wonderful “new media” vehicle that allows a company to connect with its target audience away from its web site (i.e. in the communities and neighborhoods where their target audience is gathering).

The question on the mind of many brand managers and decision makers is “Should I be pursuing Podcasting?” It depends on the industry that you’re in and your target audience. For example if you are in the retail space, then Podcasting is probably not the best utilization of your time and energy. However, if your company is in the technology space then you should seriously consider it.

Podcast usage is widespread in the technology sector. In a recent email survey of people who downloaded a white paper by KnowledgeStorm’s:

“32% of respondents said their usage of podcasts has “increased” or “significantly increased” in the past six months. Overall, 41% said they had listened to Podcasts on more than one occasion, while 13% said they “frequently” downloaded them.”

KnowledgeStorm’s target audience is IT professionals. Those numbers indicate that Podcast usage is in the increase in the technology sector (almost a 1/3 was listening to more Podcasts that six months ago) and that almost half the users have listened to a Podcast at least once. This data would indicate that if you want to reach into that technology community online then Podcasting is a tactic for you.
