So how many of them did you get right? How many sites have you never heard of before today? Just like blogging does not equal social media optimization, a MySpace account does not equal social media optimization also. While MySpace is undoubtedly the largest social network site, there exist plenty of opportunities within the other top ten sites to reach your target audience in an environment that has a lot less noise than MySpace.

I don’t have my scientific calculator in front of me, but that looks a lot like a power law distribution. I wonder if this means that one social network will always be dominant, and that the best way to hang onto a tail position is to be 1) on the way up, 2) on the way down, or 3) a solid niche player.

Most markets have room for two dominating companies, so I think that there is an opportunity for someone to get close to MySpace in terms in size.
What I also found interesting from the numbers, was how more sticky some of the sites like Friendster was compared to Tagworld.

Hi David, this is great info on the major players in social media space. Have you run into any posts out there that include a breakdown (description) on how each of these sites are similar or seem to do differ from each other? I began registering to each of these sites to get a better idea, and each requires me to fill out endless profile questions like “I’m scared of:” etc.
FYI, I pride myself on not being too terrified of anything, but maybe “sharks”.

Frank, you bring up a good point in that most people have not heard of the last five sites on the list. I can sense another couple of blogs posts on these sites are needed.
