Barack Obama – The Social Network Candidate

With Barack Obama’s formal announcement that he was running for the President came the unveiling of his new web site. The web site is a homage to social networking.

As the Biving Report put it:

This site is all about social networking. I mean all about it. “This Campaign is About You.” The Obama campaign wants you to create a profile and then start connecting with other supporters, writing blog entries, attending events and raising money

A couple of features of the site that caught my attention are:

  • The BarackTV section and the link to YouTube. Marketing political candidates via video will be a huge part of the 2008 election and it is good to see a candidate that understands this.
  • The link to Facebook at the bottom of the site and no link to MySpace. While this is a big coup for Facebook, MySpace is by far the biggest social network and having no link to a MySpace profile is very surprising.
  • Peer to Peer Focus: Even the language used on the web site is social centric. Options like create your own profile, network with friends, write your own blog and become a fundraiser all people centric terms and not the traditional political options like Donate, About Candidate and News.

Barack Obama has certainly staked out the grassroots position. Will social networking be enough to give him the nomination? Who knows, but it will be fun to watch and follow how social networking impacts the race.
