Greg and SMO Mashup tagged me for 5 reasons why I blog so here they are:
Soapbox Effect:
Blogging provides me with a platform to share my opinion on a variety of SMO and Internet marketing related topics. I believe that I can add value to the social media conversation and that is why I started the blog.
Community:
Having a voice or opinion is no use if nobody is listening. When I first started writing about social media optimization last fall, the only other people talking about it were Lee, Cameron and Rohit. Social media has really exploded in popularity since then and there are some tremendously talented people who are writing about social media marketing now.
Knowledge:
One of my reasons for wanting to blog about social media optimization was that it would force me to learn more about this field. Social media tactics and techniques are still evolving and changing and through this blog I am forced to continually increase my knowledge.
Test:
My online background is in search engine optimization. One reason for starting a blog with a brand new domain was to see how the major search engines react to the site and whether I would end up in the Google sandbox. The blog has provided me with some great insight into how the search engines view content, and who they value different types of links.
Experiment:
My first set of posts were all about social media optimization, so I have been experimenting with posts about other topics including politics and brand marketing. It is interesting to see how different titles and topics can attract traffic and links from markets that I was not expecting to reach.

Nice. I like your experiment factor. I help run a completely unrelated (from SMO/work) local community online and topics are extremely diverse. As it’s a community, the actual focus of the site gets diluted according to various interests but at the same time it’s very eyeopening to see over time, what brings new people in and what they have in common that makes them stay and participate.
Cheers!
