I like your experiment factor. I help run a completely unrelated (from SMO/work) local community online and topics are extremely diverse. As it's a community, the actual focus of the site gets diluted according to various interests but at the same time it's very eyeopening to see over time, what brings new people in and what they have in common that makes them stay and participate.
