An article at Techcrunch about MySpace news recently caught my eye.
MySpace news was supposed to be the social networking giant’s equivalent of Digg. Stories would be submitted and then users would vote on then similar to Digg. The articles with the most votes would appear on the home page.
But as Michael Arrington wrote “But the front page of MySpace news shows most stories with zero votes. Two stories have a single vote. None have more than that. Perusing through the various categories shows the same thing – page after page of stories with no votes or other evidence that anyone is visiting the site.”
The problem I see with MySpace news is that while it is still in beta, it is not visible (linkable) from any of the highly trafficked MySpace pages. When MySpace turns on the traffic expect to see MySpace News traffic explode.
For marketers who have been successful driving traffic from Digg, MySpace news offers another tremendous opportunity to drive a lot of traffic (and generate tons of incoming links) at pratically no cost. While it is still very early in the evolution of MySpace news, savvy marketers are already planning and testing the best ways to utilize this service to drive traffic to their web sites.
