Using Blogs to Sell Books
I have just finished reading Timothy Ferriss’ new book, The 4-Hour Workweek. It is a very interesting look at how to put big chunks of your life on autopilot with everything from personal outsourcing to online businesses. What I like about the book was that Tim gave specific examples of how he managed to make the transition to a 4 hour work week.
So I found it very interesting that Steve over at Micro Persuasion wrote this very interesting post on how Tim used the blogosphere to sell his book.
Tim’s book hit store shelves on April 23 - just a few weeks ago. It debuted at an astounding #123 on Amazon.com and rapidly ascended the charts. As of Monday morning its now #14 overall at Amazon. So how did Tim generate so much buzz for his book launch?
Well he spoke at two conferences, O’Reilly Media’s Web 2.0 Expo and the SXSW Conference in late March. Both of these conferences allowed Tim to reach out to the online blogging community.
He followed up these two speeches with putting together a podcast with Brian Oberkirch which was picked up by “super-bloggers” Merlin Mann and Darren Rowse. Next Robert Scoble blogged about the book and from there the book took off in the blogosphere.
So let’s review the social media marketing plan that Tim Ferris put together. He gave two speeches at conferences that Bloggers attend. He then followed that up by contacting and working with a lot of influencers within the blogging community. The result was a best selling book without having to spend a lot of money on a PR campaign or go on Oprah.
The best thing about Tim’s social media marketing plan is that anyone can do it. What does your social media marketing look like?
