What A Week

Who says that things are slowing down for the summer? We had more visitors and new subscribers this past week than any week since we launched the blog.

We kicked off the week with our inaugural Inside Social Media interview with Kris Jones, President & CEO of pepperjamSEARCH. Over two days Kris discussed how Pepperjam uses social media tactics to distinguish itself in the market as well as how Pepperjam’s clients are using social media to grow their business online. The interviews in full are available here and here.

When asked about Pepperjam’s strong use of video on its blog Kris responded that “Text is static and visual. Podcasts are auditory. Videos are active, visual, and auditory, which creates a much more powerful form of communication… In every instance, video is a more powerful medium than static text or audio.” This video expertise has generated new business as the “What would you do for a Free One Year Supply of Energy Drink?” video has gotten over 125K views on YouTube and won Pepperjam a contract from Who’s Your Daddy, Inc. for a free one year supply of energy drink.

When asked about what social media tools and tactics Pepperjam is using with its brand named clients, Kris responded “Some of the tools we have at our disposal include building backlinks and generating traffic through Digg & Stumbleupon, creating viral videos on YouTube, and generating buzz throughout the blogosphere. In short, we use various strategies to get other people to talk about our clients stuff and we are very good at what we do.”

Our Inside Social Media interview next week is with James Connell Director of e-Commerce for Roots Canada. James talks about some of the specific social media tools and tactics that Roots is using to distinguish itself in the marketplace.

We also wrote how that Social networks are working there way into the lexicon of mainstream American as a recent episodes of Law and Order, as well as articles in Slate.com and the NYT.com.

Couple of interesting articles that we came across this week. One was the 8 Simple Rules For Social Media Marketing in Business to Business Markets by Stuntdubl. The part that resonated with me was this:

Remember also - you are pandering to TWO audiences - 1. The audience that is your distribution point (digg, reddit, netscape, myspace, facebook, etc. etc.) and 2. Your usual audience. You have to get through audience number 1 to effectively get to audience number 2. Make sure to know BOTH audiences, and craft your campaigns to be effective to BOTH groups, and the crossover between them.

Pablo covered a new report about “Stereotyping Facebook & Myspace”. In essence the report says that good middle class kids use Facebook, while the working classes use MySpace. There is some very interesting data here that I want to cover more in-depth next week.

Thanks for that link to Pablo’s blog. That post was a good read, and helped me pin down some of the things that I felt were wrong about the report he references.
