What Sites Send Traffic – Day 2

June 6, 2007

Yesterday I wrote about a test that we are running to see what social media sites send traffic.

We are using Google Analytics to measure the traffic from each social site. After the first day, the traffic data looked like this:

• Stumbleupon.com – 132 visits
• Reddit.com – 33 visits
• Digg.com – 8 visits
• Technorati.com – 3 visits
• Indianpad.com – 2 visits

The following sites sent 0 traffic on the first day.
• Netscape.com
• Del.icio.us
• Google.com/Bookmarks
• Myweb2.search.yahoo.com
• Socialogs.com
• Furl.net
• Diigo.com
• Wirefan.com
• Bibsonomy.org
• Looklater.com
• Blinklist.com

Some interesting things about the traffic. While I expected that StumbleUpon would send the most traffic, I am really surprised at the 33 visits from Reddit, especially as I created a new user account for Reddit for this experiment.

Also, the topic of the blog post was the Story of Tea not exactly a topic that you would think would excite a lot of people. The 178 visits from social media sites was almost equal to the amount of organic search engine traffic that the site received. Overall the blog post was the 3rd most visited page on the site on Monday. Tomorrow I will look further at the traffic information as well as any links that this page has received.

Those are some interesting results. I wouldn’t have expected much traffic from Reddit, either, especially with the political bent most Reddit users tend to have.

StumbleUpon makes sense, though. For some reason, that’s one social media site I tend to overlook. I should keep it in mind the next time I’m trying to promote something via social media.

I look forward to seeing the final results.

Hi Adam

Yes I am really surprised at the Reddit traffic. It is something that I will need to explore further to see if this particular article resonated with that audience, or whether Reddit is a social media site that can send traffic.

Great post,

You said your Reddit account was new. Are you established as a poster on the other social networks?

Hi Lisa

I do have accounts on Digg, Stumble, Delicious, Netscape and Technorati. The rest I created for this test.
