So our experiment to see what social media sites drive traffic is coming to a close and we have gathered a lot of interesting data. From the traffic data, I was surprised to see that Reddit sent the second most amount of traffic, after StumbleUpon.
StumbleUpon is a really good source of social media traffic and I highly recommended that you include this as part of your social marketing strategy.
Since I made no attempt to “game” the social media sites by asking people to vote for this article, I was not surprised that Digg traffic was a low as it was.
It is interesting that a Yahoo site explorer backlink check shows several Digg links.
Just as interesting is that Yahoo is showing multiple links from Furl.net even though that site did not send any traffic to our web site.
The experiment was successful in that it generated traffic and 328 page views, making it one of the most viewed pages this week on the site.
We intend to repeat this experiment next week with another post and we will also increase the number of social media sites that we target. We will publish those results when we get them.
Final Traffic from Social Media Sites
• Stumbleupon.com – 132 visits
• Reddit.com – 37 visits
• Digg.com – 8 visits
• Indianpad.com – 4 visits
• Technorati.com – 3 visits
• Netscape.com -3 visits
• Myweb2.search.yahoo.com – 2 visits
The following sites have sent 0 traffic to the web site:
• Del.icio.us
• Google.com/Bookmarks
• Socialogs.com
• Furl.net
• Diigo.com
• Wirefan.com
• Bibsonomy.org
• Looklater.com
• Blinklist.com

Hi David,
As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m surprised that Reddit sent as much traffic as it did, especially since you didn’t “game” the system. I wonder if this was just due to the nature of the specific post you submitted, or if it is a relatively common trend. Hopefully, next week’s experiment will provide some insight.
Also, I’m just curious what analytics tool(s) you use to monitor your results.
P.S.: You might already have this comment sitting in your moderation queue, but my browser decided to act kind of funky the first time I tried to submit it, so I apologize if you’re getting this comment twice.

Hi Adam
I am using Google Analytics to measure the traffic to the site. I am curious about Reddit also, and I am going to use a post from a different market next week to see if their traffic was site specific or topic specific.
