Stumble or Digg?

Great article by Darren Rowse at Problogger.net titled “Why StumbleUpon Sends More Traffic Than Digg. In the article Daren looks at the referring traffic for one of his blog posts titled “11 Surefire Tips for Improving Your Landscape Photography” and what he found was really interesting.

Traffic Data From Week 1

  1. Digg - 24,410 page views (43% of all traffic to the post for this period)
  2. Direct Traffic - 8634 page views
  3. StumbleUpon - 5599 page views (9.5% of traffic to the post)
  4. Wykop (A Digg clone)- 4661 page views
  5. Delicious - 2523 page views

Data From Days 8-43 (The Long Tail)
Digg traffic has dropped to next to nothing - yet StumbleUpon continues to send traffic 6 weeks after the post was written.

  1. StumbleUpon - 21,963
  2. Direct Traffic - 5,253
  3. Google - 2,530
  4. Digg - 1,057
  5. Wykop - 934

Quality of Traffic
Darren points our something that we found during our case studies which is that StumbleUpon brings qualified traffic.

“Digg users bounce on average 89.64% of the time and StumbleUpon users bounce 39.28% of the time. As a result the average time spent on the time statistic is also longer with SU readers.”

With the continuing issues that Digg has with its user base, StumbleUpon is poised to become one of the major players in social networking in the 2nd half of this year.

I would have to say BOTH. Because they both offer tons of traffic and the user base is quite different so why not go after both.

    Hi Sujan

I agree. I don’t think that it is an either/or situation with Digg and StumbleUpon. I personally think that Stumble sends better traffic and for a longer period of time than Digg does

I am also a big fan of StumbleUpon. I recently decided to perform an analysis of StumbleUpon vs. Digg traffic and, I have to admit, I was quite surprised by what I discovered.

StumbleUpon beat Digg in several areas including bounce rates and pageviews per visit.
