ShopLocal.com adds social networking to site

The battle for holiday shoppers is reading up already and one comparison shipping network is hoping that social content will make it the big winner this winter.

According to Internet Retailer, comparison shopping site ShopLocal.com has added “community” features that enable shoppers to create a profile, search through thousands of product reviews, join a discussion on Hot Deals and track prices, all of which can be shared with other site users.

Social Networks for Professionals

The Wall Street Journal of all people had an interesting article recently titled Social Networking Goes Professional (free). While many of us are well aware on the professional social network LinkedIn, niche social networks aimed at professionals in specific industries are sprouting up almost on a daily basis. The WSJ article highlighted one of these networks, Sermo.com, a social-networking site for licensed physicians. There are over 25,000 doctors who use this site on a regular basis.

A Social Network for the Affluent

Following up on yesterday’s post about how niche social networks are the future, I was very interested to read in the NYT about a new niche social site for the affluent called aSmallWorld.net.

aSmallWorld.net, an invitation only social site, has grown from about 500 members to about 150,000 registered users.

Users are mostly young — 32 on average. Many have graduate degrees and a taste for living extravagantly on more than one continent. Sixty-five percent are from Europe, 20 percent from the United States and the rest scattered around the globe.

The Future of Social Networks

During a phone conversation with my dad last week about why so many Americans are buying English premier League soccer teams we got talking about the really high amounts of money being spent on these teams. As I started to pontificate about how these owners could recoup their money, I realized that what I was talking about was the future of social media. It is my belief that over the next 18 months that people will migrate from large general social sites like MySpace to niche sites that are built around their common interest or passion.

GM Gets Social Media

Maybe it was from reading too many Facebook style articles but I admit I was a little skeptical when I saw the headline that GM Europe was launching a groundbreaking “Social Media Newsroom“. But when I read the article and visited the new GM Europe web site I have to admit I like their approach, although I would not call it groundbreaking.

It appears that someone from GM has been paying attention to social media, but instead of building a social network like Wal-Mart, GM has decided to test the waters using existing resources.

Orbitz Joins Social Networking Bandwagon

Orbitz is the latest travel company to jump on the social media bandwagon according to an article in the New York Times. The Orbitz site now features Traveler Update, which is meant to help visitors make travelers share tips and ideas to make airline travel a little easier.

“This is an engagement tool for us,” said Randy Susan Wagner, the company’s chief marketing officer. “Instead of Orbitz just throwing customers a lifeline with the information we offer, we’re allowing travelers to throw lifelines to others.”

8 Reasons to Start Using Facebook for Business Today

That was the headline in an article in the American Chronicle recently. The summary of the story was “The viral and highly informative social network Facebook makes it a perfect marketing tool for many businesses. The top eight benefits of the Web site are detailed in this American Chronicle article, including the site’s high percentage of daily users.”

Facebook is a really hot topic on social network circles so I clicked through to read the article to see what the ideas were. Using Facebook from a business standpoint is relatively new to many marketers and product managers so I was intrigued to see what the 8 reasons were. These were them:
