[...] After my The Future of Social Networks post I have been watching to see what sports teams are doing online. So I was interested to hear about the refurbished Dallas Cowboys social networking site. The Cowboys site is home to blogs and discussion forums for fans and team staff. The Cowboys also hope that the social media site can be an outlet for fans to express themselves and meet others. “The blog site has created a strong online community of friends who are avid fans of the Dallas Cowboys and consistently provide positive feedback and support,” stated Derek Eagleton, Dallas Cowboys Internet Director. “With this system in place, our fans around the world can communicate with each other on the latest news,” he continued. The Dallas Cowboys Fan Zone boasts approximately 22,500 registered users. [...]

Hi Michael

Great comments thanx. I think that some sort of digital profile that you can take from one site to another is the next "big thing" for social networks. It would make life much easier for anyone planning a campaign

[...] A recent post from David, titled ‘The Future of Social Networks‘ got me thinking about the subject as a whole and how it might develop in the future. Social Media is certainly not just a buzz word, it’s a movement. People are able to interact freely, share their own thoughts, emotions and are able to connect with others with relative ease.
SMO and SMM are finally being recognized as the correct acronyms for this process and activities. I have been writing about it for the last 8-9 months.

David,

Having watched the emotional AC Milan-Sevilla match last week at a local pub here in Chicago, I'm finally starting to get why football is so popular around the world.

I agree that there is a need for brands to get more connected and engaged with social networks. But I'm not so sure consumers are ready to jump to more niche-oriented networks yet. The main reason for that, I believe, is the lack of any sort of portability for your digital profile data. I understand that people want to participate in networks more tailored to their interests, but I'm not sure they want to sign up with 6-7 different networks to do it. At this point, it's far easier to just join MySpace or Facebook, create one profile, and start a group or community there.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Michael
