Earlier this week I wrote about my top ten posts for 2007. While I was researching that pots I thought it would be interesting to look at the kind of traffic that I got this year and where it came from.
Top Line Numbers
- Visitors: 49,947
- Page Views: 81,317
I launched this blog in Q4 of 2006, so I am pretty happy with the traffic to the site, especially since the topic of social media is a pretty niche topic.
Traffic Sources:
- Direct Traffic: 14.69% or 7,337 visits
- Referring Sites: 55.26% or 27,600
- Search Engines: 30.04% or 15,004 visits
As someone with an SEO background I was really intrigued to see that over 55% of all traffic came from other web sites. I was also surprised that a new domain like this was able to get so much traffic from the search engines.
Referring Sites:
- StumbleUpon: 18,421 visits
- Sphinn: 1,705 visits
These were the two notable web sites that drove traffic to the sire. I have written many times about SU and its ability to generate traffic. Note that 89% of the SU traffic has come since August 1, when I started to focus on building up my SU profile (http://braveheartdesign.stumbleupon.com/).
Sphinn is a mini Digg, just focused on search marketing. Sphinn drives quality traffic to the site, plus increases the visibility of the blog within the search marketing community. When putting together a social media plan it is always a good idea to find the Sphinn’s of your industry and be active within that group.
Search Engines:
- Google: 14,220 visits or 94.7% of all search engine traffic.
What to make of these numbers? The Google sandbox was never an issue with this site. I have been able to rank in Google since October of last year. That Google sent almost 95% of all search engine traffic is surprise.
I don’t like having all my traffic come from one source as that makes me very susceptible to changes in ranking algorithms. Having SU and Google as main traffic sources, means that I am not relying on any one source to bring traffic to the sure.
One of my goals in 2008 is to increase the number of subscribers to the blog. Subscribers will give me three main sources of traffic, reducing further the impact that one traffic source.
