Sponsorships On Social Networks

January 16, 2008

There are a lot of senior executives trying to figure out how social networking can enhance their brand images and perhaps even boost sales. In fact, the position of “chief social media officer” has joined the pantheon of executives in the C-level suite, according to Richard Feinberg, director of the Center for Customer-Driven Quality at Purdue University.

“Businesses that don’t participate are going to be left behind,” he told CRM Buyer. “It may not be critical yet this year, but it’s going to be in the future.”

The first social media step that many companies take is to launch a blog.  The problem with this idea is committing to producing content on a consistent basis. A company’s blog that hasn’t been updated for weeks or months is perceived worse than a company that doesn’t have a blog.

That is why I expect to see more companies get involved in sponsorship of social networks. Sponsorship in a niche area within a larger social network can expose a company to a large number of potential customers, without the organization stress of launching their own social network.

Sponsoring an authority blog in lieu of committing to a corporate blog, IMO, is not social media participation. It’s advertising, pure and simple, absolutely no different than doing display advertising on ad networks.

Social media is all about putting yourself out there and being part of the conversation in an authentic way. IMO, If you’re sold on the benefits of getting involved in the blogosphere, get involved.

Hi

Very interesting (and useful) blog (especially because of your integrated approach to media / new media).

Would you like to exchange links. My blog is on advertising, media and creative thinking.

How To Rule The World 01.16.08 at 10:50 pm

I can see where social media is appealing to agency level companies, since it can drive so much traffic. I also agree that getting an agency to product good quality content on a daily basis would also be hard. Especially since agencies feel that all knowledge should not be let out of the box and shared among others. I work at an agency now and I feel them poking around, looking for ideas on how to capture this market
