What the Affiliate Summit Session on Social Media Should Have Contained
My post about the Social Media Strategies in Affiliate Marketing session at Affiliate Summit was not meant to ruffle feathers. It was just opinion of the session not meeting my expectations.
So what should the session have been about? Well the topic was “Social Media Strategies in Affiliate Marketing”. Obviously blogging is a large part of social media marketing so it makes sense that it be covered by the panel.
But what other marketing strategies could an affiliate use to make money? Well one of the biggest opportunities in the social networking space today are Facebook applications. As an affiliate I would have loved to hear from someone who has successfully built a Facebook app, and how they used it. What did they learn from it, how did they do it and do Facebook apps work in every vertical?
Another hot social media area is video. comScore reports that they were 10 billion videos viewed online in December. How can I as an affiliate use video to make money would have been a perfect topic for this audience. Yes I know there was a separate video marketing session at Affiliate Summit, but that does not mean the topic had to be ignored in a social media session.
There are hundreds of social networking sites today. Which ones should affiliate marketers use and which ones should they avoid? What types of conversion rates could I expect to see across the different social networks? What tactics work best on these sites and what tactics should I avoid?
What about MySpace? It is still by far the biggest social networking site, but as an affiliate marketer can I make money on MySpace? If I can, what verticals work best on MySpace and what verticals should I avoid?
These are just some of the topics that I think should have been covered in a session called Social Media Strategies in Affiliate Marketing. It is a pity that they were not.

It was a pity they weren’t covered, but I think we did a great job of beginning the conversation about how to use social media in general from a 500 foot viewpoint. The panel was meant to be from a meta perspective of social media rather than going into very specific niches or platforms since all social media networks operate on the same psychology.
Perhaps next time we can have a 201 level class to build on the 101 level class from Vegas
