Green Social Site Gets Funding

March 20, 2008

I came across a press release from RiverWired last week. RiverWired is the first website to provide both informative content and a social networking platform for the growing market of consumers and advertisers interested in green, eco-and environmentally-friendly lifestyle topics. They were able to raise $1.5 million in seed funding to create original Web video series and associated blogs around environmental lifestyle content.

“RiverWired is proud to provide a convenient place for people interested in living greener, healthier lives to rapidly find information, resources and community support that will help them to meet their goals,” said Founder and CEO Catherine Billon. “By providing a one-stop-shop where audiences can easily find and share eco-friendly stories, information and entertainment, our goal is to grow this community even further and to serve as a catalyst for positive social and environmental change.”

What I find interesting about RiverWired is what they are doing with video. RiverWired has a video channel on its web site, but it also distributes it video across the net on sites like Crackle, Dailymotion, Veoh, Yahoo and YouTube. Instead of only showing the videos on their site, they are going out and getting them in front of people regardless of where they are online. The RiverWired YouTube channel for example has 28 subscribers and over 1400 channel views. This is a great example of social media marketing by making your content portable and distributing it instead of relying on driving people to one place to watch it.
