The Prime Minister Twitters

I was shocked when I read a UK Publication that mentioned how UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has joined the social media revolution by becoming the first head of a European government to open an account on Twitter. I might have to revisit my previous comments that Twitter is a fad and does not have main-steam appeal!

I find it really interesting that the UK government has a Cabinet Office minister for transformational government. The minister, Tom Watson, has set up a Whitehall taskforce so ministers can use Web 2.0 for their own ends.

Wikipedia For Band Searches

Interesting article by Reuters discussed the missed opportunity by the music industry to capitalize upon searches for bands & artists that result in a visit to Wikipedia.

A typical search result on any of the popular search engines for a band or musician will display the artist’s official Web site, Wikipedia entry and MySpace page — often in that order.

“The interest that people had to go to MySpace to find out more about their favorite band is waning in favor of going to Wikipedia,” Yahoo head of programming and label relations John Lenac says. “In the last six months, it’s surpassed it.”

Talking Reputation Management With Aaron Wall

I recently had the chance to ask search engine optimization expert Aaron Wall about reputation management and how to use different social media tools to “squeeze out” negative references from showing up on the search results page. This was a topic that Aaron had written about in the past and I am grateful to Aaron to take time to answer my questions

Why is Mahalo so slow?

When I was at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas, Mahalo.com founder Jason Calacanis gave the keynote speech. Calcanis spoke about his human powered search engine called Mahalo.

The keynote intrigued me enough that I went to my room, signed up for an account on Mahalo and recommended three sites, in three different categories for inclusion. Well it is 33 days later and my recommendations are still not accepted or denied. They are still in limbo. There has been no communication from the editors about the links. Why?

American Airlines Testing Facebook

Mediapost reported last week that American Airlines has launched a new marketing tool disguised as a Facebook widget.
The widget, called Travel Bag, lets Facebook friends share personal tips and experiences American Airlines is hoping that the widget will help them learn more about what consumers want.

“We want to understand how consumers interact with one another,” said Billy Sanez, American Airlines director of advertising, promotions and corporate communications, who admits the widget has become a “bit of an experiment.” Sanez, 34, who has been tinkering with Facebook apps for the past eight months, said: “There’s no controlling a widget. You just put it out there and hope it spreads virally.”

Fastest Growing Video Sites

We wrote recently about the 10 largest video sites and the amount of traffic they get every month. Compete.com had an interesting article on the video sites that have seen the largest growth in traffic over the past 12 months.

Some observations:

  • GodTube.com tops the list, with supernatural growth since launch in Spring of 2007.
  • VBS.tv, Jack9.com, Current.com and Rocketboom.com are sources of originally produced content. These so-called “broadband studios” are producing innovative and, in some cases, exclusive content that has captured loyal followings.
