Saw this over on Buzz Networker where they linked to a slideshow at O’Reilly Radar on Facebook trends. Click the O’Reilly link for the full presentation of Facebook trends, but here some interesting facts:
- 193+ million users broken down 51% Female and 45% Male
- Largest age group of active users in the USA – 18-25
- Largest growing category in the USA – 55-59 ( with 60-65 not far behind)
- Top countries in Asia for Facebook usage – Indonesia and Hong Kong.
- Only Africa books the trend with more male than female users.
- North America and Europe account for over 70% of Facebook usage
With all the media attention that Twiiter is getting are you still using Facebook as much as you have had in the past?

I still use Facebook as much as ever. It is where I mostly keep up with “real life” friends and family.
Twitter is where I tend to meet new people, make connections, and find and share information. My family would be bored silly by my Twitter stream and my Twitter followers would be bored stiff by my Facebook stream.
Great point about the difference between twitter and facebook audiences.
Thank you for the statistics. I find them very useful. Some other things that you should know:
Facebook had 91million active members (up 195% in 1 year) in March 2009.
LinkedIn 12.5 million active members (up 143% in the year)
Twitter had 14 million active subscribers in March (up a phenomenal 1200% in the year)
This is a serious marketplace for any business to be investigating, but in order to leverage the market correctly we must understand the demographics involved and use appropriate messages. But of-course Social Media marketing is more about involvement than it is about advertising. I make regular comments on this on my website http://cio-perspectives.com/.
This is one reason why I shall be holding a series of seminars in the second half of this year in order to make corporations aware of what they can achieve my making the right intervention in this marketplace.
