July 2009

I was intrigued when I saw an email from eMarketer this week titled Social Media Best Practices. eMarketer had an article about a survey last year of social media marketers by MarketingSherpa. The survey looked at the effectiveness of social media marketing. The results are interesting.

Helps branding but not sales

Large majorities of the respondents rated social media marketing effective at influencing brand reputation, increasing awareness and improving search rankings and site traffic.

So if someone writes something negative about you on Twitter how should you respond? Should you:

a) Ignore it
b) Contact the person directly and see if you can work something out
c) Sure them for $50,000

I your answer was c then you must work for Chicago’s Horizon Realty!

I came across a post on Podcasting News about how Horizon Realty, a property management company, filed a $50,000 libel lawsuit Monday against a former tenant, Amanda Bonnen, over one of her alleged Twitter posts.

There is a new Twitter book coming out by Tee Morris called All a Twitter: A Personal and Professional Guide to Social Networking with Twitter. The book has a good chapter on how to set-up a Twitter account which is informative regardless of your Twitter experience.

Here is an excerpt from that chapter.

1. Complete Your Profile.

Consider how you want to introduce yourself to people. Take a moment to fill out your profile and let people know something about you. You don’t have to tell Twitter everything, but you do want to make an introduction.

The ROI of Social Media

July 23, 2009

One of the challenges that social media has faced over the last year or so is showing the kind of positive ROI that will draw companies to invest more in social media marketing.

Well research from social media platform Wetpaint and digital consulting firm Altimeter Group found that companies with the highest levels of social media activity on average increased revenues by 18% in the last 12 months, while the least active saw sales drop 6% over that period.

Twitter’s Numbers

July 20, 2009

I was traveling last week when the news broke that Twitter’s confidential documents had been hacked and were being displayed on web site like TechCrunch.

Some of the data was quite revealing, especially around internal growth projections of the site where it projected that it would have 100 million users in 2010 and 350 million in 2011..

Twitter estimated that 25 million people worldwide would be using the service by the end of 2009

  • • 2009: 25 million users
  • • 2010: 100 million users (300% growth)
  • • 2011: 350 million users (250% growth)

Had an interesting conversation last week about the news industry and social media specifically about how mainstream media is using Twitter.

At the most basic level, Twitter is a two-way conversation. Follow most people’s Twitter stream and you will see a number of retweets and pieces of conversation back and forth.

That is not how the media is using Twitter and I think it is part of the reason why they are not being successful with social media.

Getting back To Basics

July 13, 2009

While dodging the rain in Vermont on vacation I spent some time thinking about our social media plans for the second half of 2009.

In the first half of the year, we like everyone else, have been focusing on Twitter and Facebook. You cannot pick up a mainstream newspaper or magazine these days without some reference to Twitter and I expect that Twitter usage will continue to grow this year.

We will continue to use these two social media sites, but I also want to get back to social media basics and get reconnected on sites like StumbleUpon, YouTube etc.

On Vacation

July 1, 2009

The reason for the lack of posts recently is that I am on vacation until mid July. Normal posting will resume then:)
