The Future of Social Media Marketing

Social media has transformed itself in the last 2 years from blogs and forums to Facebook and Twitter. But I see another transformation unfolding in social media as the video market is poised explode.

By video I do not mean repurposing commercials on YouTube. Video is producing original content for the web.

In recent months we have seen an explosion in demand for .TV domain names major professional sports leagues and sports network ESPN have started to acquire of develop .TV domains. For example look at:

These new online video sites are not to replace the existing dot com properties that have been developed. Instead they are online extensions to their dot-com Websites.

As Steve Smith of Inside Domaining puts it:

“dotTV for Web video sites creates a branding strategy by using multimedia leverage as a smart, innovative and meaningful multi-channeling option.”

Fast Company had a recent article about an Internet-based TV talk show The Young Turks. More than 450,000 people watch The Young Turks on YouTube, where they have over 100,000 subscribers. Thousands more in the highly-desired 18-to-35 demo listen on Sirius Satellite Radio and through the TYT Web site, making there audience competitive with, say, MSNBC’s Morning Joe (382,000 viewers a day in September), or CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight (616,000).

I watched the Google infomercial on CNBC last week and I was struck by a comment by of the Google engineers involved with Android. To paraphrase what they said, more and more young people are using smart phones like the iPhone and Android to connect to the Internet instead of using computers. With the 3G and 4G networks now available in the U.S., watching streaming video on your phone is no longer buggy experience. The quality is HD and easy to view, so more and more people are using it.

The great thing about online video today, is that it can be interactive. Through a service like ustream you can have a high quality live stream and interact with your audience in real time. It’s like having your own TV channel dedicated to your company or brand!

I think social media marketing is only going to continue to grow. With the increase in these types of domains it really shows how many businesses are starting to get on the bandwagon of social media marketing and search marketing local. The internet is going to be the biggest success for these businesses, especially when you have SEOers focusing on the search marketing local area. I think the biggest explosion in internet marketing is yet to come.

When it comes to social media advertising, traditional marketing is antiquated and ineffective; a waste of your ad spend. The ad-mentality and online behavior of the Millennial generation makes them all but inaccessible, and trying to [interrupt] them with classic methodologies is only going to widen the gap. Whether you embark on a partnership with Offerpal is beyond the scope of this article, but what matters is that you realize engagement-based offers are the future of social media advertising. Don’t try to interrupt consumers, make your offer seamless. Don’t distract them from a social media experience, help to enhance it.
