Top 15 National Retailers by Twitter Followers

November 19, 2010

Some great data from Marketing Profs on the growth of social media marketing among 100 US retailers from mid-July to mid-Sept. 2010. Yesterday I looked at the Top 15 Retailers on Facebook, and today I will look at the top 15 national retailers by Twitter followers. If you’re interested in seeing the full report from Media Logic, please click here.

It is interesting to notice the difference between what retailers are focusing on Facebook and which ones are focused onTwitter. For example on Facebook the top Department/Discount stores are Kohl’s, Target and Wal-Mart. On Twitter they are Staples, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Macy’s. What does that tell you about the demographics on Facebook versus Twitter?

Thanks for the post! It’s very interesting to see the differences between the retailers on the top 15 for Twitter and Facebook. The demographics clearly must be different, but at the same time the level of engagement is much different, as well. It’d be interesting to compare what these companies do day-to-day for their fans/followers. I found a good read on the effect of numbers in social media, seems like something you might enjoy. Thanks again!

Good list, but I believe you have left out a few. For example, there are also: Urban Outfitters (295,272 followers), Lacoste (238,546), DKNY (214,163), MAC Cosmetics (23,692).

Demographics definitely play a role here, and my guess is that there aren’t many low end brand followers active on Twitter..Facebook seems like a platform that everyone is active on, whereas Twitter doesn’t appeal to everyone.
