2010 has been a phenomenon year for Twitter with over 25 billion tweets. But most of the social network’s growth has come outside the U.S. as the comScore chart of U.S. visitors to Twitter.com shows that Twitter’s growth in the U.S. has stalled.

I have a network of sports web sites and we make use to social media to drive traffic to our sites. So I was really interested to read that Hofstra University is using social media to boost ticket sales for its sports teams.

According to a new report “Social Media in the Marketing Mix: Budgeting for 2011” four in five US businesses with at least 100 employees will take part in social media marketing next year according to eMarketer.
That is almost double the 42% that used social media in 2008.
“Marketers that have spent the past few years ramping up their internal social media marketing infrastructure—and their presence on sites such as Facebook and Twitter—will take social media to new heights in 2011,” said Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer principal analyst and author of the report. Financial companies are having a difficult time finding friends online according to a recent survey from Fiserv.
In it’s August 2010 survey, a majority of consumers say they connected with at least one company or brand on a social site (57%), but only 11% were connected to a financial institution on such a site.

Funny story about a Food Network Twitter contest which a friend of mine won.
Via it’s Twitter account, @Foodnetwork, in addition to recipes, Food Network runs trivia contests. The winner gets Food Network swag.
My friend replies to the trivia question and a couple of hours later gets a Direct Message from the Food Network saying that he had the correct answer and that they would be sending me some swag. All he needed to do was send them a DM with my address.

The Fortune 500 have finally discovered this thing called Twitter according to “The Fortune 500 and Social Media” a yearly report from the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Three in five Fortune 500 companies now have an active Twitter account, compared with 35% in 2009. That is slightly more than the 56% of Fortune 500 companies that have Facebook accounts. Note that a company was considered a user of Twitter if they had an official corporate account with posts (a.k.a. a “tweet”) made within the past thirty days. Read more...
